Calvary Independent Baptist Church was originally started in Grandy, NC by William F. McLemore in 1982. In 1986 Pastor McLemore moved the church from Grandy to Sunbury; a rural farming town, that at that time had no Independent Baptist Church. The 1st service in Sunbury was held on February 2, 1986. Pastor McLemore served as pastor from 1982 until October 8, 1995. Pastor McLemore went home to be with the Lord as a result of skin cancer and other medical complications. We are grateful that his wife and daughter continue to serve in our church.
Pastor Cecil Tiller became pastor on October 8, 1995. Under his leadership the church saw substantial growth and the church was able to pay off their building debt and today the church is debt free. The church building had been the old Sunbury post office but today is being used as a lighthouse in the community of Gates County. Pastor Tiller resigned on February 3, 2008 due to health problems. Wayne Wells was selected as interim-pastor. Pastor Wells served as interim-pastor from February 3, 2008-June 14, 2009. He was used by God to maintain what Pastor McLemore had started back in 1982. God also used Pastor Wells in directing the church as they chose their next pastor.
In March of 2009, Calvary Independent Baptist Church called Pastor Glen Hutchinson as their new pastor. Pastor Hutchinson and his family arrived from Florida and became pastor on June 14, 2009.
Pastor Hutchinson has resigned as pastor of Calvary Independent Baptist Church here in Sunbury and in June of 2013 moved back to Florida where he continues to preach and serve the Lord.
Calvary Independent Baptist Church has called Cecil Tiller once again to be their pastor and is looking forward to what the Lord has for us in the future. Please pray for the work here in Sunbury and Brother Hutchinson in Florida as we labor for the Lord.
